We have created this new practical resource in response to requests from professionals supporting those living with inherited sight loss conditions and their families.
Our charity searches for causes, treatments and ultimately a cure for inherited sight loss conditions and provides information and support for those affected. We are committed to supporting professionals to deliver the best care and support.
From the moment someone realises that ‘something isn’t quite right’ with their sight, through to diagnosis and being able to live confidently – and independently – with inherited sight loss, we are here to ensure families can access the information and support they need.
As you know, people not only need to be diagnosed and treated, they also need to be informed, engaged and be active participants in their care.
Retina UK offers a wide range of practical and emotional support, specifically developed for people with inherited, progressive sight loss. Those affected understandably often experience significant anxiety, uncertainty and many questions relating to life now and in the future.
Peer-to-peer support is central to our range of support services. Our community tell us the opportunity to meet with others living with inherited sight loss can be life-changing.
This pack, co-designed with professionals, will support you as you have positive conversations with families. It includes information on how Retina UK can help, how to make a referral to our charity, and where to signpost to our free-to-access support. The resources are also designed to be given to clients.
As one of our service users told us:
“I would say to professionals that peer support is invaluable. I cannot tell you how much it changed my life to just know there were other mums losing their sight and they had done just fine. I would say referring people on to peer-to-peer support services is just as important as helping them clinically, if not more. I had nothing like that growing up and I only wish a professional had encouraged me to seek support.”
We hope your Professionals’ Pack will be a useful resource and we look forward to working in partnership with you. Join our mailing list and keep updated with our work.
