First-in-human trial launches for Familial Drusen cell therapy

Sanaregen Vision Therapeutics has received FDA clearance to begin a first-in-human clinical trial of SVT-001, an investigational cell therapy for Familial Drusen, a rare inherited retinal disease that currently has no approved treatment.

In a nutshell:

Sanaregen Vision Therapeutics has received FDA clearance to begin a first-in-human phase 1/2 clinical trial of SVT-001, an experimental cell therapy for Familial Drusen, a rare inherited retinal disease that causes progressive central vision loss. The therapy is designed to potentially improve retinal function and vision in people with the condition, which is commonly linked to mutations in the EFEMP1 gene and currently has no approved treatments. The early-stage trial will primarily evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of SVT-001, although further details about the SVT-001’s specific mechanism, study design or recruitment have not yet been announced.

What is Familial Drusen?

Familial Drusen, also known as Doyne Honeycomb Dystrophy, is a rare inherited retinal dystrophy (IRD) that causes gradual loss of central vision. Early symptoms include difficulty seeing fine detail, distortion and increased sensitivity to light with progressive central vision loss often beginning in mid-adulthood.

It is often caused by mutations in a gene called EFEMP1 which is responsible for producing a protein that helps to maintain the structure around retinal cells. When this gene is mutated, the protein is made incorrectly and as such cannot be broken down properly. As a result, it starts to accumulate beneath the retina forming tiny fatty deposits known as drusen. Over time, these deposits merge into a distinctive ‘honeycomb’ pattern and block the normal flow of nutrients and oxygen from blood vessels to the light-sensing photoreceptor cells, causing them to become gradually damaged and die, affecting central vision.

There are currently no treatments available for the condition, however therapeutic approaches in development, such as SVT-001, offer new hope to the community.

What is SVT-001?

SVT-001 is an investigational regenerative cell therapy in development by Sanaregen Vision Therapeutics. Currently, there is limited information about the specific mechanism behind SVT-001 and the trial delivery protocol.

This first-in-human early phase 1/2 clinical trial will primarily be assessing the safety and preliminary efficacy of SVT-001 for improving retinal function and vision. However, trial details such as study size, recruitment dates, locations and endpoints have not been publicly reported by the company as of yet. We look forward to hearing more about SVT-001 and the trial soon. We will keep the community informed about any updates.
