VisionAid Technologies Ltd is a family owned & run business who have been providing solutions to assist partially sighted & blind people since 1996. They have grown to become one of the largest specialist low vision & blindness product suppliers in the UK. Their range of over 1,000 products are carefully tested & selected from over 100 brands and manufacturers around the world.
One of these brands is Unwired Things, a Danish assistive technology company, who are dedicated to creating simple, affordable solutions to everyday problems with users at the centre of their design approach.
Unwired Things, founded in 2020 by Craig Scott, manufactures the IKONN Accessibility System. This ecosystem is designed specifically to make everyday household devices affordable and accessible for blind and visually impaired individuals.
Rather than embedding expensive speech-synthesis hardware into every single device, Unwired Things utilizes their myIKONN App, a mobile app that converts a smartphone or tablet into the control hub for its devices. It offers large-format visual displays of data and fully integrates with existing screen readers (like TalkBack) to assist deaf-blind or low-vision users.
Their system connects to a growing family of everyday appliances and tools that feature clean, high-contrast, high-visibility screens for sighted or low-vision users, while offloading audio feedback to the app. Some of these include:
- Kitchen & Home Appliances: Includes smart kitchen scales and thermometers.
- Measurement Tools: Includes a specialized talking tape measure.
- Health Monitors: Includes blood pressure monitors.
- Utility Sensors: Includes colour sensors and dedicated object locators to help users identify everyday items around the home.
By offloading the smart audio processing to a single remote or smartphone app, Unwired Things creates highly flexible, mass-market accessible tools at a fraction of the cost of traditional individual talking appliances.
