South Wales Local Peer Support Group
This Peer Support Group provides a welcoming, safe and friendly opportunity for people living with inherited sight loss to meet up to share experiences, tips and information.
We are pleased to invite you to join facilitator Stuart Francis for our first South Wales Local Peer Support Group meeting where we are delighted to welcome our guest speaker Becs Harris, Wellbeing Service Manager at Sight Cymru who will be telling us all about the services they offer and the Sight Loss Pathway in Wales.
Sight Cymru is an independent Welsh charity dedicated to supporting people living with sight loss throughout Wales. Founded in 1865, it is the largest entirely Welsh sight loss agency, providing a wide range of practical and emotional services to those who are severely sight-impaired or partially sighted. Their core services include:
- Rehabilitation & Support: Specialist officers provide training in daily living skills, such as safe cooking, lighting, and using low-vision aids.
- Resource Centre: Based in Pontypool, this centre offers a variety of specialized products, including talking watches, large-print items, and big-button phones.
- Digital Inclusion: Training is available to help individuals use assistive technology, voice assistants, and online shopping.
- Eye Clinic Liaison: Staff are present in clinics across South East and West Wales to support people newly diagnosed with sight loss.
- Emotional Support: The charity provides 1:1 emotional support for service users and their unpaid carers to help manage the wellbeing challenges of sight loss.
Sight Cymru also host various social and activity groups to help people remain active and connected such as:
- Social Clubs: Various clubs meet for activities like quizzes, yoga, and knitting.
- Sports Groups: They offer a weekly VI Tennis group in Newport.
- Events: Regular fundraisers and workshops are held, including pottery painting and blindfold bowling.
Please come and join us to hear from Becs and ask any questions you may have. We also welcome and encourage you to have your say in how we move forward with growing this new peer group in South Wales and how we can support our community living with inherited retinal dystrophies.
We hope you can make it and look forward to seeing you there!
