Edinburgh local peer support group

  • Date and Time info: 2/09/2023 from 13:00:00 to 15:00:00
  • Face-to-face

This Local Peer Support Group provides a welcoming, safe and friendly opportunity for people to meet up to share experiences, tips and information.

We are pleased to invite you to join group facilitator Valerie Scott and group supporter Jim McLean for our next Edinburgh local peer support group in-person meet up where we are delighted to welcome our guest speaker Dr Roly Megaw, Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian, who will be speaking about his current research into inherited retinal dystrophies.

Come and join us when we return to the Tollcross Room at Nicolson Square in Edinburgh to hear from our guest speaker Roly where you will have the chance to ask him any questions you may have, followed by a social catch up.

Roly Megaw is an academic ophthalmologist with a clinical and research interest in the inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs), a group of untreatable, monogenic conditions that are the leading cause of visual loss in children and working adults.

He runs the IRD service in NHS Lothian and is a PI for interventional clinical trials (gene therapy, exon skipping therapy) and natural history studies, amongst others.

His research lab uses animal and stem cell models to better understand the pathogenesis of IRDs and define the pathways disrupted in disease that eventually lead to retinal degeneration, with the ultimate aim of identifying novel therapies.

Please come along to take advantage of this great opportunity to speak with Roly and the rest of the group over refreshments that will be available from the café on the day.
