Edinburgh Local Peer Support Group
This Local Peer Support Group provides a welcoming, safe and friendly opportunity for people with inherited sight loss to meet up to share experiences, tips and information.
We are pleased to invite you to join facilitator Valerie Scott for our first Edinburgh Local Peer Support Group meeting of 2025 where we are delighted to welcome back Jim McLean to speak a bit more about family trees.
Would you like to know more about your family history or family tree? If so, please come and hear from Jim McLean who will talk about how he uses the internet to research family history, build family trees and to uncover some very interesting ancestral stories.
Jim is also pleased to be sharing an update on the Companion Plus One concession on the National Entitlement card which he has been actively advocating for change over the past couple of years.
The National Entitlement Card (NEC) is a multi-purpose smartcard that provides access to various public services in Scotland, including concessionary travel. For those with disabilities who need assistance while traveling, the NEC can include a “Companion” feature. This feature, often indicated by a “C+1” logo on the card, allows a designated companion to travel for free with the cardholder on eligible public transport. This is designed to ensure that individuals who cannot travel independently are not prevented from doing so. The primary focus of this “companion” aspect is to facilitate accessible travel.
Come and join Valerie and Jim and feel free to ask Jim any questions around family history or the fantastic work he has been involved in to ensure those living with sight loss can travel independently with a companion throughout Scotland.
Please meet up with Valerie and the group by 12.45pm inside the theatre lobby where we will then be guided to our meeting room.
Please could we ask that you register via the form below so we know who to expect on the day, thank you and we look forward to seeing you there!
