Scotland Regional Peer Support Group
This regional Peer Support Group provides a welcoming, safe and friendly opportunity for people with inherited sight loss to meet up to share experiences, tips and information.
We are pleased to invite you to join facilitator Sarah Speed, and our Scotland Group for a fabulous day out in Falkirk visiting the Kelpies at Helix park followed by lunch at Italian restaurant Gambero Rosso.
The Kelpies are a pair of monumental, 30-metre-tall (98 ft) steel horse-head sculptures located in The Helix park. Designed by Scottish sculptor Andy Scott and completed in 2013, they form a dramatic gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde Canal. While their name is derived from the shapeshifting water spirits of Scottish folklore, the sculptures serve as a tribute to the heavy horses—such as Clydesdales—that historically powered Scotland’s industry, agriculture, and canal barge networks.
Following our visit to Helix park we will then take a short taxi ride over to Gambero Rosso for a relaxing lunch by the canal. You can view their menu here – Gambero Rosso – Menu
Gambero Rosso has been serving Italian food on this stretch of canal for over 15 years. Their name means ‘red prawn’ in Italian, after one of Sicily’s most prized ingredients. With large arched windows that look out over the canal and lock, wooden floors, leather booths, and a terrace on the waterfront for when the sun comes out, it is a little piece of Italy on the Forth and Clyde Canal.
Meet up Points and Timings
Please meet up with Sarah and the group outside the main entrance to Falkirk Grahamston train station at 11am. The following trains from Glasgow and Edinburgh arrive into Grahamston before 11am.
- Glasgow Queen Street to Falkirk Grahamston – 9:45am – 10:39am
- Edinburgh Waverly to Falkirk Grahamston – 10:03am -10:40am
Once everyone has met up with the group we will take a short bus ride from the station directly to Helix park to visit the Kelpies and their gift shop etc. Following on from here we will take a taxi over to the restaurant in time for lunch which is booked for 2pm. After lunch we will arrange for a taxi to take everyone back to the train station to make their way home. (Please note that taxi costs for this event will be covered by Retina UK courtesy of the National Lottery Community Fund Scotland).
