Taking on The Thames Path Challenge
Anisha: “I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) about 6 years ago. So far, I’ve managed to keep it fairly hidden and have only told my immediate family and closest friends. I realised this year that there’s no need to keep something like this a secret. As a disease which has no known cure yet, I feel I should be raising its profile and that of Retina UK. Why not use my position to increase awareness of the charity and fundraise for research!
“I feel it is important to raise funds for research into not just RP, but all inherited retinal conditions. I am doing this for members of my family who have suffered through this condition in times when fundraising events like this were not an option. I have never taken on a fundraising trek before. I am looking forward to taking part as it will be a great personal challenge for a cause that is extremely important to me. Being able to do the walk with my sister is a bonus!”
Sheena: “Anisha’s diagnosis was an incredible shock for all of us, but it has highlighted the extent of her strength, bravery and positivity. I am so proud of her attitude, and taking on this challenge is just another example of how she doesn’t let anything get in her way. For me, sharing in this experience with her and bringing recognition to Retina UK is an immense privilege.
“RP has run in my family for three generations now, so we have always been very aware of it. However, the public awareness of degenerative retinal conditions and their impacts seems to be quite low. Anything we can do to raise the profile of Retina UK and to raise funds for research into potential treatments will hopefully benefit future generations.
“I love walking, so the Thames Path Challenge really appeals to me. I can’t wait to share the experience with my sister and to push each other through to the finish!”
