There is evidence from animal studies that excessive exposure to bright sunlight may be harmful to the retina, especially if the retina is already damaged.
It is recommended that high quality UV-A and UV-B blocking sunglasses are worn, and in bright sunlight it may also be sensible to wear a hat with a broad brim.
Sunglasses with a CE mark show that they are made to an agreed European standard. There is also a British standard for sunglasses which should be looked for when buying them British Standard BS EN ISO 12312-1.
