Volunteer at the Virgin Money London Marathon

3 October 2021

Image shows two Retina UK London Marathon runners - they are standing side by side smiling and wearing their race medals. A blue Retina UK flag is visible behind.

Our runners taking on this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon are simply amazing and we want to do everything we can to show our support. We’ll be cheering them on as they run the world-famous 26.2mile route from our cheer point and we’d love for you to join us to help make us even louder!

About you

You don’t need to have any previous experience, just come with a smile and be ready to clap, cheer and celebrate! If you’re happy to spend a few hours outside, don’t mind large crowds and want to be part of the electric atmosphere and a friendly team, we’d love to hear from you. For this role, you’ll also need to be aged 18 or over.

About the role

We’ll have a member of the Retina UK staff team at our cheer point to coordinate the day. As our runners go by (we’ll spot their blue Retina UK running vests but also follow their progress on the race day app) we’ll give them big cheers, claps and cries of encouragement to help keep them going.

Our cheer point will be based at mile 13/22. The route doubles back on itself here so you’ll be able to cheer on our runners twice!

If you’re happy to help us setup our cheer point (we’ll have Retina UK branded items to display) and to tidy away at the end of the day, this would be really helpful too.

About us

We’re Retina UK. We are the only UK charity dedicated solely to working for people affected by inherited sight loss. Our vision is a world where everyone with inherited sight loss is able to live a fulfilling life.

We want to do more of what we do best – supporting people affected by inherited sight loss and funding pioneering research. We rely entirely on the generosity of our supporters to fund our vital work.

What we can offer

We’re extremely grateful to anyone able to volunteer for Retina UK.

  • A member of our fundraising team will be in touch all the way up to race day making sure you have all the information you’ll need to have a fantastic time.
  • On the day, a member of our staff will co-ordinate the cheer point.
  • You’ll get a Retina UK t-shirt to wear (and to keep after the day).
  • After the race, our runners will be attending our post-race reception at a nearby hotel where refreshments will be available. You’ll be very welcome to come along too!
  • We are able to cover reasonable travel expenses. If you are based outside of London, we may still be able to cover travel costs – please have a chat with us.

Please note, whilst the outlook for large events this Autumn is positive the exact COVID-19 related restrictions that may be in place are yet to be confirmed. We will be working in line with any COVID-19 updates and will keep you fully informed of any necessary changes to the event.

About you
Do you have a passion for taking photos? Perhaps you’re just starting out in the industry, studying a photography course or a hobbyist happy to volunteer to help Retina UK at the biggest challenge event of the season? If you’re a dab hand with your DSLR and local to London, we’d love to welcome you to join Team Retina UK for the Virgin Money London Marathon! For this role, you’ll also need to be aged 18 or over.

About the role

We have a team of 22 amazing runners taking on the world-famous 26.2mile route. We’ll have a cheer point and post-race reception at a nearby hotel to make sure they have the best experience possible.

At the cheer point, we hope to capture photos of our runners in action. Later, at our reception, there will be opportunity to photograph our runners with their medals and celebrating with their friends and family.

Not only will these photos be treasured mementoes for our runners but they’ll also help us to advertise our running events in future, helping us to do more of what we do best.
